I dedicate Manjushri Portraits for the two people who unfortunately died during the two weeks of the 2015 Manjushri Summer Festival.

 

James, a South African, who was caught by the dangerous waters of Morecambe Bay, right next to Manjushri.

 

A few days later, Debbie, a Canadian, the Main Teacher of the Toronto Kadampa centre. Taken away by a heart attack.

 

A beautiful ceremony took place for them in the Temple during the festival.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Both of them had accepted to be part of this photographic project. They did it spontaneously and with enthusiasm. And without worrying about what I caught on camera. With a clear intention I really noticed. They seemed to have a serein practice of detachment. The wisdom to continue their journey peacefully.

 

At first, I felt guilty to have made what is probably their last portrait. I changed when I saw James’s picture was representing him for the ceremony. Then, in a very touching moment, I met James parents and partner in Manjushri, they warmly thanked me, and by doing so set me free. I remembered, Manjushri Portraits are for today, but also for tomorrow.

 

Everyone knows each new day may be the last one. James and Debbie, the first two “Manjushri Portraits” to die, demonstrates this difficult but fundamental teaching.
